Arlington Adults

At Advent, we encourage all of our members to get involved in some form of growth group ministry.  Here are some reasons why you should consider joining and below this are some ways in which you can do that at Advent at Arlington.

Why Join a Growth Group Circle?

1.) You will understand the Bible better in a Growth Group.

If you've ever listened to a Bible teacher or preacher and wanted to stop that person and say, "But what about...?" or "I don't understand!" then a growth group is for you! Preaching and teaching is one way of communication - you listen while someone else speaks. It's fine for communicating information, but is not as effective in helping people develop a personal application. This is where a growth group comes in. In a small group setting, you can ask questions, participate in a discussion, and hear others share insights and illustrations of the truth you have been taught.

2.) You will begin to really feel like part of God's Family.

Most people who have been a part of a group say the greatest benefit is the close relationships and friendships that develop. You will have someone to call during the week to share an urgent prayer request or an exciting answer. You'll discover that your needs and problems are not unique - we're all in the same boat. It helps to know that others are facing the same difficulties or have lived through them and learned spiritual principles in the process.

Over fifty times in the New Testament the phrase "one another" is used to describe our relationship to other believers. We are instructed to love one another, pray for one another, accept one another, bear one another's burdens, and build one another up.  The only way you can obey these commands is in a small group. We really do need each other. If you're lonely, the answer to your problem is to join a group.

3.) Prayer will become more meaningful to you.

Many people are hesitant to pray in front of others, especially in a large church. In a growth group of 10 to 15, you will learn to participate in prayer by having a conversation together with God. No one is pressured to pray, but as you become more comfortable, you'll be able to join in. There are many promises in the Bible related to group prayer. In praying together, we are drawn together and we find answers to the needs in our lives.

4.) You will be able to handle stress and pressure better.

Small groups provide excellent support in times of crisis, change, and stress. You'll have a sense of stability and security knowing there are people who really care for you and who are committed to standing with you.

When someone loses a job, a family member has an extended illness, or a family needs a babysitter, your small group can address the practical needs arising from these challenging circumstances. Your group can coordinate meal service, babysitting, prayer support, and other assistance. Many people in our church could testify that they would not have made it through a difficult time if it hadn't been for the support of their group.

5.) You will have a natural way to share Christ with unbelieving friends, relatives, and work associates.

It may be that some of your friends who don't know the Lord wouldn't be caught dead in a church. Just the thought of church makes them defensive. But those same people may be open to an invitation to a casual Bible discussion in a home or office setting. In a small group, your unbelieving friend can ask questions and express honest doubts without feeling "on the spot." When your friend sees the love, warmth and honesty of your group, it will make them more receptive.

Sunday School

Adult Sunday School begins each Sunday morning at 10:oo am in the fellowship hall.  The focus of class time is on Bible study.  Coffee and pastries are provided.

Children's Sunday School and teen classes are held concurrently.  Nursery care is available during Sunday School too.

Adult Circles

We have four adult small group "Circles" that meet regularly for Bible study, meals, fun, service projects, worship and prayer.  All persons in the church are encouraged to join a circle, for it is a place where you can really get to know others and they can get to know you.  You are welcome to visit the various circles at anytime.  We are sure you will find one where you will feel at home and be challenged to grow in your faith.

The Great Banquet

The Great BanquetAdvent Arlington supports the Great Banquet, encouraging men and women to attend these spiritual growth retreats and their corresponding challenge of a lifetime of Christian discipleship.

The Great Banquet is a 72-hour experience, beginning on Thursday evening and ending Sunday evening. For three days, guests live and study together in a worshipful time of singing, prayer and discussion. During each of the fifteen talks given by laity and clergy, the theme of God's grace is presented. Guests participate in the daily celebration of Holy Communion and examine more fully the presence of Christ in His body of believers. They personally experience His grace through the prayers and acts of a loving, Christian support community.

This weekend experience is for anyone who:

1. wishes to strengthen their spiritual life;
2. wants to have a better understanding of prayer, the sacraments, study, and Christian action;
3. strives to live a Christian life that bears fruit for God;
4. seeks to know Jesus as Lord and Savior and to make Him known.

You are invited to be a guest at the Great Banquet given by God, and to feast in His goodness and love.
