Denominational Renewal

Renewal Ministries at Advent
Renewal Ministries of Advent   Advent is an evangelical, orthodox congregation within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)  (www.pcusa.org) and have been actively involved for many years in working to improve and renew our denomination. We have belonged to the Presbyterians for Renewal (www.pfrenewal.org), The Presbyterian Global Fellowship (www.presbyterianglobalfellowship.org) ,  the Confessing Church Movement (see, www. layman.org), and what is known as "the Coalition" (www.presbycoalition.org) . We have given money and support to the New Wineskins Initiative (www.newwineconvo.com). This page gives brief summaries of what we are doing, as well as some current information about where we stand and where we are as a congregation.   Locally   Advent has been an active part of the Presbytery of the Mid-South. Our pastors and elders serve on committees, and we have met regularly for a long time regarding the condition of the PCUSA. We have stated our views on numerous occassions, most recently to our Presbtyery in an Appeal before the last General Assembly and an Overture passed by our Presbytery in November. Certain members of our Presbytery have challenged this Overture and the Presbytery has acted to defend itself.   Nationally   We are active members of the Presbyterian Global Fellowship and have supported Presbyterians for Renewal and the Coalition in the past. Our Pastors have actively sought a reorganization of the PCUSA through what is called the "Two Fellowship" proposal". We have been actively consulting with groups like the New Wineskins Intiative to see if their views have applicability to Advent's efforts and we support them. Chris has authored a Theological Paper analyzing Calvin's views on church polity as they might apply to our situation. Recently, we have been working with other orthdox pastors to find a way to bring an end to the destructive conflict within our denomination.   We are In a Time of Crisis   We believe that it is time for our members to begin to educate themselves concerning the crisis we are in. Many congregations nationally are leaving our denomination, including some who have been our partners in renewal for a long time. We do not know what the future will bring, but we do know our members need to be well informed about the issues.

Reflection Verse

Be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  Romans 12:2
