Squad at Worship
Series: Squad
Colossians 3:15-17
The Christian community gathers together to worship. Worship services give us a chance to return praises back to God, to be inspired in our faith, and to draw others into the life of the church.
If you're in town on Sunday, try to be at worship. A regular practice of praise helps to keep one's life devoted to God and aware of our opportunity as Christians.

    Squad – In the Faith
    Series: Squad
    2 Corinthians 13:5

A key word that we’ll focus on for 2019 at Advent is Connection. The local church is a collection of Christians, on mission together. Within a church, there are different sizes of communities that serve different purposes. Our goal is to steer people into three different communities: a worship community, a learning community, and a practicing community.

Although we enter into Christianity by God’s invitation and call, we are also encouraged to examine our faith. We start out 2019 with a chance to do some personal examination.

Are we genuine in our Christian practice today?

    Opening the Green Box
At Christmas, may we realize that we have buried our own potential into our own green boxes.
May we believe that the world is not rigged against us, but for us.
For unto us a Child is given and a Son is born.
May we have the faith to see it.

The first Christmas drew an interesting guest list. Jesus promised that his sacrifice would draw all sorts of people to himself. Our orientation to Christianity should open us up to all people instead of closing us off to a certain, like-minded few.

    Matthew 2:1-12
Gift giving has changed from buying things to "Giving things that truly have great meaning and show great love for the individual." - Cara David
The Magi gave a gift because they saw who Jesus was. May our gift giving result in our loved ones "being seen" No matter what is given, may it create sacred moments of friendship and love.

Grooves – The Last Third
Series: Grooves
All should seek the good end. Steinbeck said in his East of Eden, "And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good."

The final third for the Masculine Path is the journey of descent, of learning the lowliness of humility, wisdom, and legacy. Jacob climbs the first part of his life, but is a background character in the last part. Hebrews says that he needs support to at the end of his life. He’s learned to place his life in another’s hands.

The final third for the Feminine Path is the ascent, the arrival of delayed blessing from obedience. At the end of the story, Naomi is praised by the same women that showed her contempt. She came to Bethlehem empty, but at the end, her arms are full.

Conversations with the Creator – Defining the Relationship
Ezekiel 37:21-28

The sacraments of baptism and communion are the warp and woof of our conversation with God as we relate to Him ever through covenants fulfilled in Christ.

Sacraments bind God to us, us to God, and us to each other. They are the glue that holds the conversation together. Our conversation with our Creator takes place within the fabric of covenant, the signs of which are baptism and communion.

Conversations with the Creator – Learning to Listen
    I Samuel 3:4-14

It is important for us to include children in our service with a children's message because in it our children are learning to listen to God and we learn to listen to God through our children's faith. We miss out on the truth and blessing of being God's covenant community if we do not emphasize and train up our children. Contrary to the world, we declare that our children are just as much a part of our community as an adult. In a children's message, our children learn to listen to the conversation with the Creator just like Samuel. At the same time, we, like Eli, learn to listen to God's message to us through the faith of our children.

Conversations with the Creator – Learning the Language
    Exodus 14:26-15:2

Singing as an especially corporate activity of the church teaches us the language of our faith, giving our minds and hearts freedom to express love to our Savior.

On the great day of salvation for the Israelites when the LORD finally and completely delivers them from the Egyptians through a miracle in the Red Sea, the Israelites prove our Creator-given response by singing praise to God. Imagine this vast sea of people learning the lyrics that their leader Moses wrote for them and then shouting them out. This song was passed down from generation to generation as the people of God learned the language of their soul's salvation. When we sing, we are giving our minds and hearts the pathway to express our gratitude for God's saving work in us and around us. Music has a unique way of calling our whole being into action to respond to God. When we sing, we join with the angels' already ongoing song around the throne of God.

Conversation with the Creator – God Speaks
Preaching calls for change by reminding us of what we know, by providing a subversion story, and by steering us towards meaningful work.

We see in II Timothy 4 that Paul describes the sufficiency, power, and inspiration of God's Word and its role in Timmy's life. Paul shapes the purpose of God's Word among God's people. This is God speaking into our lives with a power that He breathed into our nostrils at our creation. Immediately following this description, Paul is giving us the main method for delivering this life-giving Word to our hearts: through preaching. Through the hard work and Spirit guidance of the messenger, preaching has power to speak through our minds to our hearts and convict, encourage, rebuke, and equip.

Conversations with the Creator – Giving
We are a part of the body of Christ, we are His representatives on Earth. We are to give back. We are to share, not only our gifts, we are to share our life, our treasures, our time...everything we have. We give as a response as Moses called us to do. We respond with generostity as Paul called us to do. We give because god has touched our lives. He not only made us but he lost us and bought us back again. We give because we are two times His.

Conversations with the Creator – Joining the Conversation
As Deuteronomy says, our attitude towards the sojourner is shaped by remembering that we were once sojourners that God welcomed in.
Greeting - an announcement of the space, who belongs in it, what happens while we are here, and what shall we do after we leave the space.
The book of Deuteronomy stands as the primary example of the dynamism of the Torah tradition whereby old memories are endlessly re-presented, rearticulated, and reimagined in new ways that keep the main claims of faith pertinent and authoritative in new circumstances.”

Whiff – The Smell of Sacrifice
Series: Whiff
The summer time brings a new season, and a new season comes with its own look and smells. It is incredible what we can learn from our sense of smell. As a matter of fact, reading the Bible through a sense of smell may open our eyes and freshen our understanding of the scriptures, perhaps seeing them in a new light as we do the summer season.

A Living Sacrifice (Romans 12:1) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

John includes only seven of the signs (miracles) performed by Christ. The first is at the wedding at Cana, a joyful time of celebration. The last is the funeral at Bethany, a time of mourning. This is how the world is being recreated, among the songs at wedding and the tears at funerals. Jesus is present for it all.

Whiff – The Smell of Perfume
    Series: Whiff
Matthew 26:7-9 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”

This woman did what she could, with what she had, even if it frustrated the social order of the community. Like the disciples we tend to have an "educated opinion." We need people like the woman to reminds u of "uncalculated devotion."

2 Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. 3 For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers[a] came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
5 Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, 6 who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. 7 For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. 8 Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
